Chief of Police David B. Rausch has been with the Knoxville Police Department since January 1993. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1998 and worked as a Patrol Supervisor for the East District Patrol Division. In 2000 he was assigned to serve as the Patrol Coordinator/Staff Officer for the Deputy Chief of the Patrol Division. In 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to the East District Patrol Division Command Staff. In 2004 he was transferred to the West District Patrol Division Command Staff. In December 2004 he was assigned to Command the Central Business District and to assist as the Acting East District Commander for the first Quarter of 2005. He served as the Commander of the Central Business District until December 2005 when he was transferred to West District Commander. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in December 2006. He was promoted in September 2009 to Deputy Chief and then appointed Chief of Police in March 2011.Prior to joining the Knoxville Police Department Deputy Chief Rausch graduated in 1986 from the University of Louisville in Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Military Police Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant. He is a graduate of the 105th Administrative Officers Course at the Southern Police Institute and received his Master of Science in Justice Administration from the University of Louisville in 2001. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations 218th National Academy Class. He successfully completed the Tennessee Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar in May 2008. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum 40th Session of the Senior Management Institute for Police.He has taught law enforcement and civilian personnel throughout the Southeast and the Eastern Coast of the United States and served on the teaching staff of the Southeastern Community Oriented Policing Education Regional Community Policing Institute and currently is a facilitator for the Law Enforcement Innovation Center. Chief Rausch is a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainer’s Association (Charter Member), the Police Benevolent Association, the Southern Police Institute Alumni Association, the FBI National Academy Associates, the Tennessee Association of Chief’s of Police, the International Association of Chief’s of Police, and the Police Executive Research Forum.
