"Golf is a day spent in a round of strenuous idleness." –William Wordsworth With that perfect description in mind, come join us on the golf course for an event that is twofold in purpose – fun for the participants and a benefit for children and their families. And add a third incentive: A hole-in-one shot could net you $10,000.
The Edmund J. Wise Physician Assistant Student Society will host its Fourth Annual Golf Classic benefiting Kidz Team, which helps families at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. The golf outing is scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 5, at Dead Horse Lake Golf Course in Knoxville and gets underway at 8 a.m.
The cost per player for the scramble match is $75, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, gift bag, lunch and the opportunity to win various awards. Golfers may register in advance or on the day of the event by 8 a.m.
Contests include a longest-drive competition and closest-to-the-pin challenge. There are prizes for four of the Par 3 holes – $10,000 for a hole in one and non-cash prizes for holes in one on three other Par 3 holes. Prizes also will be awarded to the top teams, and in the spirit of fun, to the bottom finisher. Regardless of your skill level, this is a festive event and it aids a truly deserving cause. The Kidz Team helps families whose children are undergoing lengthy hospital stays by providing an assortment of products from laundry assistance to gift cards for meals.
Student Society President John Nolen said the organization chose Kidz Team because it has very low overhead with a high percentage of donations being distributed directly to families. According to Nolen, Bryan Butler, the owner and founder of Kidz Team, is extremely dedicated to seeing families get the help they need when their child is newly diagnosed with cancer and is fully aware of everything involved from firsthand experience. We emphasize academics at South College, and we applaud student service such as that done by Nolen and The Edmund J. Wise Physician Assistant Student Society. A balanced life is essential for staff and students, and the classic offers a chance to get outside, get some exercise and play some golf.

I will leave you with three more quotes about golf.
“It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.” –Hank Aaron
“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” –Arnold Palmer
“One under a tree, one under a bush, one under the water.” –Lee Trevino, describing how he was one under during a tournament.
South College's West campus Auditorium will be the site of a town hall meeting on Thursday, April 17th, to discuss the problem of bullying.
