PhD.
Dr. Ed Michaud is the Director of Genetic Sciences for the School of Physician Assistant Studies at South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has 18 years of experience as an educator and as a research scientist in molecular genetics and genomics. Dr. Michaud received his B.S. degree from the University of Central Florida in 1979, his M.S. degree from Texas A&M University in 1984, and his Ph.D. degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) in 1990. He was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow and an Alexander Hollaender Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in the Biology Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee from 1991-1995.
After completing his Postdoctoral Fellowship, Dr. Michaud served as a Research Assistant Professor of Molecular Genetics in the Department of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, at UTK from 1995-1996. From 1996-2007, Dr. Michaud held the position of Senior Staff Scientist in the Mammalian Genetics and Genomics Group, Life Sciences Division, at ORNL. Dr. Michaud’s research focused on using the mouse as a model organism for understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying human health and disease. During his tenure at ORNL, Dr. Michaud was also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Graduate School of Genome Science and Technology at UTK. Dr. Michaud served in a number of capacities for the Graduate School of Genome Science and Technology at UTK, including membership on the Student Advising Committee, membership on the Steering Committee, Chair of the Admissions Committee, Chair of the Recruiting Committee, and also as an instructor in numerous courses. In 2007, Dr. Michaud accepted a position as Director of Genetic Sciences for the School of Physician Assistant Studies at South College. He is integrating genetics and genomics training throughout the didactic and clinical phases of the Master of Health Science, Physician Assistant Studies program at South College.
Dr. Michaud has 32 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has given over 100 presentations of his work at local, national, and international scientific meetings. He has a broad range of teaching experiences, both in the classroom and in the laboratory. In the classroom he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses ranging from molecular genetics to comparative vertebrate anatomy. Dr. Michaud has served as Chair or Member on the thesis and dissertation committees of numerous students at UTK. In the laboratory, Dr. Michaud provided training and mentorship to numerous undergraduate and graduate students, and to Postdoctoral Fellows. Dr. Michaud also has a demonstrated track record of securing grant funding.
