Maria received her Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. During her time at Vanderbilt she worked on research projects focused on determining the neuronal densities of different areas of the primate brain, particularly primary visual cortex. After graduation Maria began working as a Research Technician at Children’s National Medical Center’s Department for Neuroscience Research in Washington, DC. There her research focused on the effect of hypoxia on the white matter developing cells, called oligodendrocytes, in the premature mouse brain. Maria has attended and presented posters at the Society for Neuroscience’s and American Society of Neurochemistry’s annual conferences. Her laboratory experience ranges from confocal microscopy to animal care to tissue staining procedures. Maria hopes to eventually go to graduate school to get her Master’s degree and is looking forward to working with the students, faculty and staff at South College.
