Once you’ve decided to go back to school, there are a few things you need to do to get the ball rolling. If you’re working full time, talking to your boss is one of the most important things to do. Not sure how to start the conversation? Whether you are going back full time or just considering a new career, here are some easy tips you can follow when it’s time to share the big news.
Request a private meeting
Don’t let your boss hear the news though the grapevine. Request a private meeting with your boss to break the news and avoid the ears of nosey co-workers. Show your boss the respect they deserve by letting them be the first to know about your decision
Prepare in advance
Before talking to your boss, have a plan and know what you are going to say. Start by telling them why you want to go back to school–to finish what you started, change careers, advance your current career, etc. What ever your reason is, express gratitude and fondness for your current job no matter if you are planning on leaving or staying. Have a few points planned to explain your decision and help answer any questions your boss might have.
Be completely honest
When talking to your boss, be completely honest about your needs and concerns. If you think that you’ll need a different schedule or fewer projects, make sure to vocalize your thoughts from the beginning and conjunctly work on a plan that will benefit both parties. It is important to have a conversation before school starts and not change plans in the middle of the semester.
Keep your promises
When figuring out a plan with your boss, make sure to commit to certain things (like being on time no matter what your new schedule looks like) and stick to them. By doing this your boss will trust you and support your studies. If you ask for benefits but don’t fulfill your companies’ expectations, it will be a lot harder to have their support.
