The Good Samaritan Award is given each quarter to a student who shows selfless assistance to a fellow student. Jennifer Gibson was leaving her class when she noticed a fellow student having difficulty with her car. Gibson then took the student to get gas and brought her back to her car where they were able to get it running again. That student’s mother was so appreciative of Gibson’s act of kindness that she nominated her for the award.
Gibson said she was surprised to have won the award.
“It kind of made my night,” Gibson said. “I was having a really bad day and I opened my email and I had an email from Dean Hillegas congratulating me and it was exciting.”
Gibson is studying radiology at South College. She said a fall as a child initially sparked her interest in radiology.
“When I was a kid, I fell in a hole and hurt my ankle pretty badly and ever since then I have had to have x-rays on it and even a few MRIs and it really interested me when I was watching them do it,” Gibson said. “That was always in the back of my mind when I decided I wanted to go back to college.”
Like many South College students, Gibson returned to school several years after high school. She wanted to better her life and create a future for herself she would be proud of so she chose to attend South College to pursue her dream in healthcare.
“I have family members in the healthcare field and they said South College students were the best and people really respect the students from there,” Gibson said. “Having a degree from South College means something.”
Of all her classes at South College, Gibson said her clinicals are her favorite part.
“It is overwhelming at first and it’s hard,” Gibson said. “…(But) once you’re in it you realize ‘this is what I want to do and I did pick the right major.'”
Gibson is very involved at South College. She is a tutor, on the student council, a school ambassador and the President of the Student Radiology Association.
“My theory for college is you don’t say ‘no,'” Gibson said, “If there is an opportunity to do something, you go ahead and do it.”
Gibson chose to attend South College because of small class sizes, great teachers and a great radiology program.
“(South College has) the best (radiology) program around this area and when I went to the school to have a tour, I fell in love with it,” Gibson said. “Everyone I talked to was super nice and I love how small the classes are and you can get to know your professors and they can get to know you and there is really a personal connection when you’re learning and your not just another face in the crowd.”
When asked what advice she would give to students who are looking to go back to school, Gibson said it is well worth it.
“Its’ going to be hard and there are going to be a lot of challenges in your way,” Gibson said, “but you have to remember its for your future … your family’s (future).
“But once you get there it will worth it.”
